I can’t believe how quickly this year is going and we’re already at June! That means it’s time to get the thinking caps on again for Father’s Day.
For some, this can be a difficult time of year. Losing a parent at any time is hard but especially so over the last year with Covid cruelly taking away precious time with family.
We should celebrate our Dad’s throughout the year but if we do “need” a memorable day then Father’s Day is the opportunity to show how much you love and appreciate them.
So what do you buy Dad’s who seem to have everything?
Give your Time
I know from experience that as parents get older they don’t always need “things”, what they value most is time spent with you and the family, and even more so after this year. You can’t beat just spending an indulgent afternoon together doing things that they love and they don’t have to cost too much either.
- If the weather allows prepare a family picnic in a lovely park.
- Take them on a magical mystery tour to one of their favourite haunts, maybe the seaside.
- Make a slap-up lunch of their favourite meal or if we’re lucky a BBQ in the garden.
- Go on a family bike ride with some “planned” stopovers along the way.
Bring back memories
- Create and frame a collage of their favourite photos that have been stuck on the phone or PC for years and rarely looked at.
- Get old VHS tapes or cine films transferred onto a DVD so they can easily look back at family memories.
Gift Ideas that support small businesses
This year has been particularly tough on retail but it has also given the opportunity for small businesses to start up and grow. I’ve been supporting other small businesses throughout the year and with Father’s Day wanted to share some of my favourites with gifts for Dads, including some of our own of course.
Gifts for Dad’s who love pen and paper
Working from home will continue to be part of our lives going forward. Our Stationery Gift Boxes are perfect for Dads who still love to write, whether its for work, weekend jobs or planning their future. You can’t beat a lovely notebook and pen set and it’s something they use everyday so will always act as a reminder. With a choice of Letterbox Gifts to more luxurious Gift Boxes, they all come beautifully gift wrapped and you can add a card with a personal message too.
For the Cycle Enthusiast
For cyclists, nothing beats being out on the road, getting time and space to clear your head. Bikeoholic is a new brand born from a passion for cycling. A range of vintage and retro 100% organic cotton T Shirts, designed and printed in Northamptonshire. Perfect for cyclists of all ages.
For the Football Addict
If you’re looking for a “football” related themed gift then take a look at Dinkit – I loved this brand when I came across it locally as football is huge in my household. Dinkit sell a fab range of stylish, crafted and original graphic art for fans of the beautiful game. Designed by fans, for fans who love football culture and their clubs. With gifts and ideas from all the major clubs it’s a football fans dream shop. Here’s one of my favourite prints from their collections, the “sounds of the terraces” print featuring the words to You’ll Never Walk Alone – it had to be Liverpool of course!
For the Golfer
Most golf enthusiasts have all the kit already but when I came across Mamafillie I loved their “Stone in One” Pebble Picture and thought it a perfect gift for a golf loving Dad. Designed and hand made in Northamptonshire by a mother and daughter team who have expanded their range to cover lots of themes and hobbies. Their prints can also be personalised.
A cutie from the kids
Also from Mama Fillie this pebble print always makes me smile and can be personalised too. Available as a 5×7 print and with a choice of colour frames.
Hope this has given you some inspiration for gifts and we’d love you to carry on shopping small and local.
